Crazy Wolf's
What is a Catahoula?

It will depend on who you ask. Most breeders of working and show dogs will tell you that they're the
most versatile breed on the planet and the best dogs they have ever had the pleasure of knowing. If
you were to ask us, not only would we reiterate these sentiments but we will also add that the
Catahoula, in all it's diversity, is an experience unlike anything else you will ever encounter. While
these animals are undeniably some of the most remarkable creatures alive, it truly takes remarkable
people to appreciate, love and nurture everything the Catahoula stands for.
I'm Interested Now What?

If you have never been owned by a Catahoula consider a few things before solidifying any decision to
purchase one:
  • First, this is NOT an appropriate breed for someone with little or no experience with dogs. They
are spirited and strong and will test their boundaries.

  • Catahoulas need a lot of exercise and room to run. We use the 1/1 rule - 1 hour a day and 1 acre
to play. This should be considered a minimum requirement.

  • Catahoulas need interaction. They will not let you forget they are there. If their social needs are
not met then they will eat your house until they are. It's that simple.

  • Catahoulas need a job. Whether for herding, hunting, or babysitting, these dogs need to have
something to do. Given the opportunity, a Catahoula will excel at any task asked of him. If a job
is not given to him then he will hire himself on where he thinks he is needed most. This may not
    be where you want him

  • Catahoulas cost money. Though most breeders are reasonably priced you can still expect to pay
between$350 - $650 for a good quality puppy. Add on transportation, veterinary costs, fencing,
housing, shows....etc. and you may find your wallet much smaller than when you started.
I'm Still Interested

We cannot emphasize "research" enough. Read books. A good one to have is "The Louisiana
Catahoula Leopard Dog" by Don Abney. Contact your local breeder and ask questions. See if you can
get an appointment to meet their dogs. If you have trouble finding a breeder let us know and we will
help you. We know of a few good ones. Know what you are buying. Research the dog's pedigree. And
please make sure any dog you purchase has had it's eyes, ears, and if older than 6 months of age, it's
hips tested. Help us keep the Catahoula the amazing dog it is today.
Should I Consider a Rescue?

We strongly support rescues. Thousands of dogs every year are left homeless or neglected. Some
rescues may be difficult in the hands of the less experienced and others will be a walk in the park.
However, it is very possible to find your next companion or working dog in a local shelter or with a
breed organization. Most breeders will "take back" unwanted dogs from their litters and place them in
another home as well.

If a rescue dog is for you, please contact your local shelter or any of the listed Catahoula rescues and
they will be happy to match you with a companion suited to your lifestyle.
